Currently, there is no way of adding subtasks in the program.

Okay, I'm looking for beta testers and UI feedback; if you're interested, please send your device's UDID (see http://www.tuaw.com/2008/08/08/iphone-101-find-udid-with-a-single-click/) to developers AT taskcoach.org.

Yeah, I was proposing a branch view. depending on where you've navigated to in the branch, if you hit the "disclosure" button( as you call it, I think), you light up the parent limb and all child branches. This allows the user to see above and below the point they're at in the branch. Once you light that view up, each level of the branch should have your ">" details button. If they slect a particular button, the view jumps to that point in the branch and shows the task details of that node.
Yikes, I guess this is kinda hard to explain accurately ;(
I agree with you Jerome, we should play around with your alpha app and just forward feedback to you.

Mmh, not sure I understand what you mean. Something like an actual tree control ? The current approach is to show the task details when a task is selected (as already happens in v1.2), and show a "disclosure button" (the white arrow in a blue circle) for parent tasks. Clicking on the disclosure button shows the list of children tasks.
Anyway; the UI will probably change during beta (or alpha) testing, when I'll get feedback from users.

I swear, you and Frank are awesome!!!
I'll throw out a suggestion for your hierarchical UI, although I'm sure you already have a good approach.
When showing a task list you show a right arrow to either go into that (sub)task as frank mentioned.
somewhere near the right arrow, you need another symbol (maybe) down arrow. This needs to be implemented as a toggle switch to go between task list to a task tree view. i.e. when you click this "down arrow" on any particular parental task, you show the full task branch of this portion of the task tree. At each level, you need to show the ">" and if a user clicks on this, they'll pop into the task view at that point in the tree. Not sure, but this seems like it would be a pretty intuitive approach, not sure what everyone thinks.

It's already implemented. Now I'm working on effort tracking. There should be a beta soon.

Jerome, any update on this feature? You guys sold me on the subtask stuff on the Mac, now I need it on the iPhone ;)

Hi, I have just started using taskcoach and am very grateful - I was getting frustrated with other task managers and was just contemplating trying to write something before I found Task Coach. I am not using it on the iPhone yet so forgive me for butting in with what may be an inappropriate suggestion - I found that copying the ipod ui has worked quite well - how about using a sliding menu : all top level tasks on one screen - clicking on a task slides the task list off to the left and a list of subtasks is shown along with a back button to take you to the parent list. This way you can nest to your hearts content and it keeps it useable - here is an example of where I have previously copied it ;) http://move-me.com/main/index.html - have a look at the diary > list of events for an example. Hope this is a constructive suggestion.

I already planned on having an edit button in the category views, to allow edition and deletion of categories.
The problem with this approach for subtasks is that it takes more taps to get to leaf tasks, which are (generally) the interesting ones, but I'll add an option to switch to list view...

There is an inconsistency in the UI as it is now. Maybe solving that will help for subtasks as well. The '>' symbol means "show tasks" for categories and "edit task" for tasks. The tasks view has an edit button, the categories not.
How about making both views more similar:
- Let '>' on tasks mean "show (sub)tasks".
- Use the edit button on top to edit tasks.
- Not strictly necessary for this feature request, but for consistencies sake: have an edit button on the categories screen too. -

I still have to find a suitable way to present a hierarchical view on the iPhone. For categories, an indentation change is enough, but for tasks which may be deeply nested, the UI will become a nightmare. Any suggestions ?
