Task view shows tasks grouped by field (eg. Category)
Task pane shows tasks grouped, rather than just sorted, by attribute (eg. category), and then allows tasks to be sorted within grouping.

Yeah, I think the only ways this could make sense are to either show aliased duplicate tasks or to use only with mutually-exclusive categories.
This is all very complex and maybe unrealistic.
The workaround I mention below is pretty good, I think.

Grouping by category is the a complicated one, by the way, since tasks may belong to multiple categories. Would that mean tasks would be repeated under each category they belong to? Hmmm.

Ok, Frank, so the "allows tasks to be sorted within grouping" is kind of already the case, or would be automatically if the grouping idea was done, right?
I could see the view like that being useful in Task Coach.
Workaround though:
I'm creating the same effect for myself by using a composite task that is really more like a category in order to create the same sort of groups. And tasks can be un-grouped by going to list view instead of tree view. So some things that are really categories (say "daily tasks" or "clients") could be made as tasks themselves and you put the tasks within those. It would be nice to have the option to group things by category with labels though as a different view maybe.

I think John means something like this? http://objectlistview.sourceforge.net/python/_images/gettingstarted-example3.png

what do you mean "grouped rather than sorted" ? How is sorting not grouping? I think you can already do what you are asking.
You can already sort by category, and you can also choose to hide composite tasks, thus show only lowest level tasks and then when you sort by category everything by category even if the tasks are from separate projects.
And you can always just filter by category and that's the easiest way to see categories.
