Possibility to use tags
It would be good to be able to use tags. It is an easy way to mark up the information, making it easy to use the search function.
Task Coach already has categories which are already tags. Feel free to add suggestions to make categories easier to use though.

Michael, you are just confusing the semantics. Categories ARE tags in every possible sense.
What you are saying is that you want some different behavior for the categories (i.e. the tags). You want to add tags via a field where you could type the name of a category and have it fill in the rest and add a category if the entry is missing. That's fine, that would be a separate request. I agree that would be nice. Please feel free to add a request.
You also want categories (i.e. tags) to be more flexibly viewed. I agree that too would be nice.
Perhaps you want dual tagging systems, so you want categories as is but you want a separate additional set of tags. I don't know if that makes sense, and we are otherwise backlogged with much more important requests.
I think the whole issue here is making the tags that we already have work better for you.

One consistent source of frustration with Task Coach is the absence of tags. I find the categories feature awkward enough to use that it serves as a disincentive to use it. The ability to build a tags library that auto-populates as I type based on tags used previously would be immensely more valuable. The way that categories displays is also awkward, showing the entire tree used to create categories and sub categories. Love tags everywhere I get to use them - and now actively seek solutions that offer tagging. Strong vote to revive this poll and hold out a possibility as a feature add.

Yeah, I think categories are tags. So we have tags. And it's unlimited, you can have as many as you like. If you really want, you can make a category called "tags" and just add all the tags you want there separate from other categories.
And you can already search for whatever you want from the description…

@Julio If you're concerned about consistency I'd recommend using categories.

Frank Niessink is right, though tags (labels) are useful only when they are writen in a constant spelling. An apparatus with which one could create tags and have them displayed at the moment of tagging a new task (probably displaying only those that match the first few written characters) would be very helpful. Otherwise one will tend to create different spellings for the same tag ("Market", "Supermarket", Walmart", Wal-Mart", etc.)

For the most part this already is possible: you can type your tags in the description field. The description field can be searched; use the drop down menu in the search control to enable it.
