Add custom fields
I would like to have a few fields that the default system does not supply. I would be great if I could add my own custom fields.
It would be nice if these fields could have options to be checkboxes or dropdown menus to select from preset options as well as the option to be user-entered alphanumeric information.

This feature is great.
I think this feature is hard to implement because the custom filed should be a specific data type: Number, date, Single line text, Multi line text, etc. Then they can be sorted ascending/descending.
Finally the very hard function is synchronization between two task systems. If both of them have different custom fields then the synchronize function may not worked correctly. -

This would allow us to add more data into each task, making it less trouble to use previous database with TC.
I have a excel database, and for each line i would like to be able to add a corresponding task, with its subtasks and all. Columns witch are filled with optional values i can handle with categories, despite some drawbacks as mentioned somewhere below, but columns witch are filled with variable text, like address, for example, can´t be properly handled by TC. I mean, i could put it somewhere like notes, or description, but it would not be a solid implementation...

I would appreciate columns for additional cost and its category, e.g. travelling cost, telephones, ...

I made a request for a client field/column. This would definitely meet that need and be more functional. I work with multiple clients and track repetitive tasks on a daily basis. This would greatly help with my time-tracking and billing efforts!

I am waiting for this feature so much!!! I work on different project. a project is a main task and all action to complete this project are subtask. it work well however projects (maintasks) are divided in many steps which corespond to target date. So my customs fields should be those target dates which could be appears on calendar view.

I am strongly in favor of adding custom fields as a feature. There should be two types of custom fields: free-form text fields, and select fields that would be similar to categories, in which you could select from a list of pre-defined options and each custom select field could be designated as either single-select or multiple-select. Additionally, I would like to have the option to specify that certain fields are required.
I know that many users, including myself, are using categories as a way of assigning properties to tasks. For instance, one category might be "User" and its subcategories would be a list of people who could be responsible for completing the task. This method works OK, but it has several drawbacks that could be overcome with custom fields:
1. There's no way to view the properties as independent columns. They're lumped in with the other categories and it's messy and long to have to view the category name, followed by the subcategory for each property. In the above example, for instance, you would have "User -> Some User Name" in the category column for every task that has a user assigned. This is hard to read and it drowns out the legitimate categories that are assigned to the task. Instead, I would like to be able to define a User column and simply have the assigned user appear as the only item in that column
2. There's no way to sort by a given property, since it's mixed in with other categories
3. There's no way to designate a particular property as required. For instance, in the above example, I might want to require that a user be assigned to every task.

WRT bart2pub's comment, I'd like to add that categories cannot be applied to efforts, and the "custom fields" would be useful for efforts too. (I have a use case for custom fields for efforts even when my tasks are well thought-out and denormalized. It's related to effort billing).

If the custom field consist of a list of possible values, you could work with categories and subcategories. If then, in the interface it would be possible to add a column for only one category and let it display its subcategories ... Then you can make your own list of choices !
