Save and reapply custom layouts
Why not add a possibility to save the settings for:
- columns shown
- view setting (list | tree / all | any checked / ...)°
- sort order
- filter settings
- viewers visible
- categories chosen
If then there is a drop down box with the list of saved layout settings, you can easily switch between different layouts !
° now these settings only can be set by a drop down box on the viewers toolbar. If the viewers window is small, you can't see it. Maybe the choices also could be added to the 'View' menu, so there is always an easy way to change them.

What about saving your viewer selection and layout with your Task Coach file? That way if you use different Task Coach files with different viewers when you opened the a file you wouldn't need to add/remove viewers.

I was thinking of requesting just a preset custom sorting for quick jumping to that (as in sortings that were done in a certain order, like first sort by ascending subject and then sort by descending priority). If this custom layout included that, it would be optimally flexible.
What it should have is not 100% of the settings determined, but it should allow for determine all these things. So if some parameter isn't set, it keeps whatever was already shown for that parameter.
Ideally this could also allow users to upload a small file that is this layout-template and then users could share layout settings with each other!
Also, I imagine this having a quick dropdown menu in the toolbar or something so users can easily switch from one to another. Layouts used very often could be applied to multiple viewers that are set as tabs. Thus, this whole idea would function like (super-)smart folders that other apps have…

Some predefined layouts will make life easier for new users I guess.

Note to self: what bart2pub calls layout is called a "perspective" in Eclipse.
