I don't understand what you mean. Efforts are the way that Task Coach tracks time. There is no separate way to mark time spent, nor should there be.
If you are just referring to ways to mark this, are you aware that you can use cntrl-E to automatically bring up the full effort dialog for a new effort? Also, you can use the system tray icon (or Dock icon on Mac) to choose a specific task to add an effort.
Is what you want the ability to add a total amount of time without specifying when the time occurred? So you'd want efforts that are relative time only instead of absolute time? And related to this, note that the effort dialog now has a quick relative time pop-up menu button to quickly set an amount of time for the effort.
