Stop hiding selected subcategories
If a subcategory's box is checked, and its parent category's box is unchecked, then: (1) the checked/selected subcategory should be visible, and not permitted to be collapsed beneath the parent;
and/or (2) the parent's checkbox should have a 'half-check' in it, or a check with a different color -- like a grey color.
These approaches are used by some the most standard software installers for Windows programs today ...at least when the user chooses the "custom" install option.
Under the current system in Task Coach, I find that certain subcategories are unintentionally attached to my new tasks, and this risks corrupting my whole collection of tasks.
And I have too many categories and subcategories to look through them all every time I create a new task, etc -- even if I automatically expand all the categories.
This is just a standard GUI feature. Please implement it.

This is an important and valid request.
What they mean is like how when you install software sometimes there is something like "fonts" for example, and when they are all chosen for installation, the heading is marked with a check, when none are chosen the heading is unchecked, but when some fonts are chosen for installation and others not chosen, then the heading has some sort of partial-check indication.
The user isn't complaining about tasks getting marked with categories that are checked. They are complaining that they forgot that a category filter was on because it was hidden under a collapsed parent category and there was no visual indication in the category list that there was any filtering happening at all.
On a side note, I think this should be implemented but I would hope that the visual indication chosen won't conflict with implementing my suggestion that I included in the request for full boolean filtering:
http://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26465-desktop-version-windows-linux-mac-of-task-coach/suggestions/563259-show-all-but-selected-categories-full-boolean-andAnyway, the request here isn't specific to how the issue is resolved. The user just wants to see easily that filtering is taking place even when composite categories are collapsed. One idea they mention is forcing the showing of just the checked categories so that all filtering that is happening is very apparent. That way of doing it wouldn't conflict with my boolean request.

Please clarify:
- What do you mean with "(1) the checked/selected subcategory should be visible". Visible where?
- How do (1) and (2) help to prevent the "unintentionally attaching" of subcategories?To clarify the unintentionally attaching of categories: Task Coach assumes that if you check categories in the category viewer to limit the tasks and notes shown, that new tasks should belong to those categories as well.
