And LATE! I forgot to list LATE in the original request, but that's important too!

I realize that there's a sort of workaround by sorting by due date or planned date, but I still really want this request.

And in connection with this, tasks that have subtasks that are overdue or due soon should be considered the same for this sorting purpose.
And this connected idea kinda goes along with this request: http://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26465-desktop-version-windows-linux-mac-of-task-coach/suggestions/464807-task-is-marked-when-subtasks-are-due

This would be nice for category filtering too.

I was thinking this all through a lot and I thought of many ways this could work. Right now, I think the best and most practical way to implement this is probably:

Make a second statusbar show up at the bottom of the window whenever categories are being filtered or a search is done. Have the new statusbar match all the same data from the regular statusbar except only for the tasks that match the search and/or category filtering. By showing both statusbars, the system total can be easily compared to the search in every way, it will be easy to figure out what is hidden, and the existence of the second bar will draw visual attention to the fact that a search or category filtering is taking place and that this is where to get information about it. If the second statusbar is a different color or is otherwise labeled as the status for the search, it will be very clear.

The current release has this partly implemented.

The way it works, when parents are collapsed, it will show due dates from subtasks in parentheses in appropriate columns (other dates too).

But we haven’t figured out the best options for whether to change the icon color or text color of parents based on subtasks. Should just the icon change? Just the text? Only date-related text? When collapsed only or all the time?

Please share any suggestions below in comments. What do you all think is the best way this should work?

Another thought: implementation of this request could be adequate to solve the concern that this other request is about: http://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26465-desktop-version-windows-linux-mac-of-task-coach/suggestions/464807-task-is-marked-when-subtasks-are-due

Also, here's a separate thought on how this could be implemented. I think this is NOT as good as the idea in the main request (and would not solve the issue for that other request), but it would be something:
Add a section to the bottom status bar that indicates particular information about whatever is selected. When a composite task is selected, the status bar could indicate the statistics about how many subtasks the selected task contains and what what their status is (shown/hidden, ideally inactive indicated separately from completed)

Yeah, I think the only ways this could make sense are to either show aliased duplicate tasks or to use only with mutually-exclusive categories.

This is all very complex and maybe unrealistic.

The workaround I mention below is pretty good, I think.

Ok, Frank, so the "allows tasks to be sorted within grouping" is kind of already the case, or would be automatically if the grouping idea was done, right?

I could see the view like that being useful in Task Coach.

    Workaround though:
I'm creating the same effect for myself by using a composite task that is really more like a category in order to create the same sort of groups. And tasks can be un-grouped by going to list view instead of tree view. So some things that are really categories (say "daily tasks" or "clients") could be made as tasks themselves and you put the tasks within those.

It would be nice to have the option to group things by category with labels though as a different view maybe.

what do you mean "grouped rather than sorted" ? How is sorting not grouping? I think you can already do what you are asking.

You can already sort by category, and you can also choose to hide composite tasks, thus show only lowest level tasks and then when you sort by category everything by category even if the tasks are from separate projects.

And you can always just filter by category and that's the easiest way to see categories.

We will almost certainly NOT make duplicate tasks for recurrence, although I know some people may like that idea. Instead, to address this concern, we will consider creating some sort of log of completions, as I mention in my comment below.

Thinking more about this, I prefer the idea of *logging completions in the effort log* but not otherwise keeping any separate task. I have plans to eventually request that with some more details as a separate request maybe…

    CStrolia,
Thanks! That's a great workaround. What you are doing is effectively making recurring tasks work as re-created tasks, such as how some other task programs do recurrence.

I suppose it might be nice to eventually have an automated version of your workaround, which would effectively allow the option of either style of recurrance!

I realize that I can falsely mark something complete to make it recur, but it is much more intellectually comfortable to mark it "skipped" — and this will be even more important if we later implement some sort of logging of completions for recurring tasks.

well, ok, but if UserVoice allows an admin to add extra votes for given users, then maybe still be possible, but nevermind. I just have a lot of feedback and I want to donate and encourage others to donate… just brainstorming.
Of course, please spend time on TC and not on UserVoice…

This is a perfectly fine request, but there's a possible workaround for now that might apply, depending on your situation:

If you select all the tasks in a category that you are no longer using, you can export them to a separate .tsk file for archiving. Just go to File>Save Selection… on the desktop version. Then you can delete the tasks and categories from your main file.

(incidentally there's a request that would make it easier to consolidate all these exports into a single archive .tsk file: http://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26465-desktop-version-windows-linux-mac-of-task-coach/suggestions/457886-ability-to-move-selected-tasks-to-a-different-tsk
    )

Anyway, if this applies to your situation, then this will work for making your iOS categories list smaller.

But I can imagine situations where this isn't what is wanted, so the request here still makes sense.

Is it just trolling to say that you people should NOT buy a Windows Mobile device in the first place…? The real priority for any new devices is Android, both for popularity and because it is more consistent and compatible with GPL and FLOSS.

I think you can achieve this by making a main task called "water flowers" that recurs at the total loop amount, and inside it put two tasks that recur with different shorter time spans.

For example, every day water flowers; another task every 3 days to include fertilizer; and if you want them consolidated, make a parent task called "watering" or something

This is a little clunky, but I can't imagine that many times you would need something like this.

This is done well by Things on the Mac, and Task Coach should steal that concept.

If weekly is chosen, show checkboxes for each day of the week

If monthly: entry for # date of the month, or entry for #th weekday day of the month (e.g. 2nd thursday)

If yearly do the same as the monthly thing but add dropdown to choose which month(s)

    See: https://culturedcode.com/things/wiki/index.php/Can_I_create_a_repeating_tasks_for_weekdays_/_weekends%3F_%28FAQ%29
    and: http://culturedcode.com/things/blog/2011/02/repeating-tasks-for-ios.html

Things otherwise is much weaker than Task Coach, it just looks nice and has this one feature better than Task Coach.

Also, quarterly stuff isn't needed specially. It can be achieved by doing every 3 months, if the other requests here are completed.

Agree with the idea of choosing custom sound files or multiple sound options.

Another point: it would be really ideal if along with this, the alarm was able to wake the computer from sleep

This is somewhat possible already by filtering and then going back to task view. The status bar then shows how many are visible, so you can see how many tasks are in each category, you just don't see it on the fly for all categories at the same time.

Otherwise, this exact feature already exists on iOS, so it's reasonable enough to consider adding it to the desktop as an option.
