Autosave every X minutes
Autosave Function: Unless I missed something I can only choose between immediate save (slow) or manual (unsave). To have an option to automatically save my work (let's say every ten minutes) would be great!
Just a note to everyone: recent updates have greatly improved the efficiency of the saving process and reduced the amount of auto-saving so there is less waste and less slowness. So we are closing this request.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hello, working with 1.3.4. it is simply impossible working with 'auto-save' option. OK when the amount of data is small but as soon as your database gets bigger, no way.
I had to switch to manual save, but I always have the risk to loose data in case of crash of the application of PC... Save every x min would be really good. -

Saving performance in 1.3.24 works great! I don't see any need not to have immediate save.

I have had problems with TC being very slow (several seconds to edit an effort or just introduce the start or stop time) until I chose not to auto-save on each change. The possibility of autosaving every few minutes would be great and we would have a balance between "data safety" and "manageability". Thanks for the application!

You can have the same behaviour by enabling auto-save after every change. It would be tempting to make this the default and hide the save button but in terms of performance it's not really feasible. My own task files take several seconds to save. Switching to a database (sqlite for instance) would make it possible but the cost in terms of maintenance is high.
That's point 2 of Bruce Tognazzini's 10 most wanted design bugs:

The current trend is that applications save their current working state, iPad, firefox etc. Task Coach should do the same. Task changes should be saved with immediate effect and the save button removed from the application.

@Andy The disadvantage of automatically turning on autosave is that the save button will always be greyed out (since all changes are always saved). That will confuse people very much, I know from experience.

Shouldn't autosave be enabled by default? A couple of times now I've lost alot of my tasks by the fact that Task Coach doesn't autosave by default. Actually I didn't even know about the feature until I started searching the feature request forum here.
I had to reboot my computer a couple times, both times without exiting Task Coach and then when I re-opened Task Coach, I was asked if I wanted to break the lock on the file. When I said yes, Task Coach opened with a very old view of my tasks much to my dismay. Why does this happen?
Note I'm using Task Coach portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/office/task_coach_portable) version 1.1.3.

@Gábor When auto save is on and you are tracking effort, TC does not save every second.

Hello,
You are right, but if time tracking is turned on, then it saves the file in every second.

I think a possible solution would be saved each time you make a change unless there has been a saving in less than X minutes. If a save have been pass in X minutes, you save after X time for not to over save.

hello.
you have the ability to save each time you change something.
if you don't change something every two minutes, it could be more efficient.
because it save the file only when necessary.guillaume.
