I agree with the automatic-focus idea, but you already can modify without opening the dialog box. Just click once on the selected task's field in the task viewer. Press ENTER after making your input.

The day view in the effort viewer is good, but by showing Time Spent Today in the task viewer, I could easily see how I've been spending my current day in context of the tasks in my list, including those I haven't worked on.

I might prefer a quick menu in the task viewer to switch the Time Spent column between total vs today. I don't want to show both at once very often. I'd just like to be able to quickly switch back and forth. Sort of like in the effort viewer.

But another view I'd like would be: Time Spent on This Occurrence. The idea is to reset this amount each time a recurring task is reset. I ought to make that a separate request…

I think this is a great idea. There is often no reason to keep the task information, this is good for consolidating.

I urge that if this is implemented, put the subtask's title and description in the effort's description when moving the effort to the parent task.

I edited this request to emphasize the link aspect that was focused on. It otherwise wasn't totally clear.

Note that there is already the ability to have prerequisites.

I'd like the idea of a quick way to mak the effort end time and date match the completion time and date

As v. 1.3.21, there is a new date/time picker. simply type “s” when choosing date or time for START of day and “e” in the time for END of day. These can be set as defaults in the preferences also, so they’ll only need to be changed if something changes the time. When these times are used, time will be hidden in the task viewer and only date is shown.

This is not a complete solution (see my comments below), but it is a workaround for now.

    Frank,
I thought about this for a while, and I think I have it all figured out…

For my own preferences, just having round to minutes available in both the details view of the efforts viewer and in the task viewer would be great. It would help reduce excessive information. I would use this setting.

    ---

But I changed my mind about supporting potential users who would want to hide time but still use time. Forget that.

Either a user wants to use time as a parameter, so it should be shown, like it is currently. Or the user is like this request, they don't want to deal with time at all. We can accommodate both of those users. But a user is going to be one or the other. Either they use time or they ignore time.

    ---

The request here is almost complete already.

A user who wants to ignore time entirely should mark the proposed/preset dates in the preferences to the beginning of the day for start times and for the end of the day for complete times and due times.

Also users can already turn off effort tracking entirely if they want.

Finally, users who want an "all day" feature, but still want other tasks to have times can be instructed to just mark those select all-day tasks with 0:00 or 23:59.

SO to facilitate this, we need to better document this. Furthermore, we could easily add 0:00 and 23:59 as special times that can be included in the time drop-down menu. This could be done immediately. It would be nice if there were a preference to choose whether to include these times in the dropdown. And it would be nice to (optionally?) show them as "beginning of day" and "end of day" instead of the numbers…

    ---

Beyond that, a FULL implementation of this request would require these missing features:

    1. A new option for recurring tasks so that we have "last completion date" *without* changing the time

This is a necessity for a time-ignoring user because then all times will stay at the default beginning or end of day.
But this feature could be very useful for other users too! In fact, I strongly support adding recur based on "last completion DATE, but original start and/or due TIMES" I would use this myself!

    2. some preference setting to "ignore time". This would:
    A. make the date preferences automatically set as I describe above
    B. hide the time section in the task editor and in the popup editor when clicking an item in the viewer (both for hiding and to make sure users never accidentally change the times away from the default)
It would not be necessary to add a hide time option for the viewer.

My suggestion is to go ahead and add #1 — it is good for all users and also makes the current workaround for ignoring time fully functional. We can then leave open this request but change it to specifically emphasize #2 and allow users to vote for it.

    @Frank,

It's nice that times can be completely ignored by entering 0:00; but I could imagine someone wanting to still utilize time as a feature but not to see it in the task view column.

I'd like to tag an extra request here, even though it is somewhat separate:
It could be nice to just hide the seconds while showing the hours and minutes. Lots of people (including me) who use time might just not want that level of detail.

I was thinking of requesting just a preset custom sorting for quick jumping to that (as in sortings that were done in a certain order, like first sort by ascending subject and then sort by descending priority). If this custom layout included that, it would be optimally flexible.

What it should have is not 100% of the settings determined, but it should allow for determine all these things. So if some parameter isn't set, it keeps whatever was already shown for that parameter.

Ideally this could also allow users to upload a small file that is this layout-template and then users could share layout settings with each other!

Also, I imagine this having a quick dropdown menu in the toolbar or something so users can easily switch from one to another. Layouts used very often could be applied to multiple viewers that are set as tabs. Thus, this whole idea would function like (super-)smart folders that other apps have…

    @bjhend:

You can already limit to a single task or to a tree by using the search feature or by opening the effort tab within the particular task's editor window.

To be clear, I think the effort viewer can do everything here except for filtering by a customizable date range. Is that right, or am I missing something?

There is a partial work-around. If you make a separate task to hold efforts for each category, then this will work. For example, you could have a "travel" task, and have separate tasks for each onsite item separate from items that are otherwise similar but are not onsite. Then you can filter an effort viewer by category tag to see the efforts.

But I see why that isn't as flexible as just marking efforts with category tags.

And actually, I just thought of a big reason why this request could be even more valuable:
If we also create a system to allow efforts to be loose (not contained in tasks), just like how notes are already, then users could track *spontaneous efforts* — efforts that are for things they didn't prepare a task item for. These efforts could be assigned categories still to make sorting easier.

Furthermore, this goes with this idea:
    http://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26465-desktop-version-windows-linux-mac-of-task-coach/suggestions/343818-keep-efforts-when-sub-task-is-deleted
And see my comment there. But instead of only moving efforts to parent tasks, the feature could move efforts from any task to just being loose efforts but automatically maintain the category tags from the task and keep them with the moved effort.

Loose efforts would just be viewable, as now, in an effort viewer, along with the efforts from within tasks.

I should make this a separate request, but I'm just commenting here for now.

@Jacob, I don't agree that this duplicates the report builder request.

Can I close this request? There was no answer to Frank's most recent question below.

You can now see on iOS only the primary task level (i.e. hide composites) as an option.

This is quite complex. Please clarify separate goals, maybe indicating your priorities.

It is already the case that subtasks are treated as having all the category tags from their parent tasks.

Note: you can type the beginning of a task's name and it jumps to that task. It isn't as good as full search option or other hiding.

But I would think it pretty rare that you need to change which task an effort goes with. It isn't normal procedure, but is just fixing a user error.

Now that TC has planned vs actual start dates, perhaps you mean that the date *proposed* for the due date should be adjusted to consider the planned start date?

In TC now, it is possible but not common to mark the actual start date for the future.
It is possible, of course, to start a task when it is already overdue.

But I agree with you that the proposed due date should consider the planned start. Perhaps it could be set as a preference. The preference would say, for example, "if a planned start time is set, then propose due date for ___ days later at end of day"

I think this is a wonderful idea.

However, there is a problem with calendar view when it has too many items, especially brief ones. I thought about this for a while, and I think the most flexible solution is to have some indication of efforts overlaid on tasks within the existing calendar view along with an option to show only tasks that include efforts.

I do also support considering the idea of a calendar that shows efforts in the same way that tasks are currently shown, where each box is an effort instead of a task.

P.S. @ Fabien: it is actually possible to have overlapping efforts, both in reality and in Task Coach, although this is obviously the exception to the rule.

AdminAaron Wolf (Admin, Task Coach) supported this idea  ·
