An auto-archiving is a reaonable request, but the moving to another file is already possible.

Select the tasks you want to archive and choose File > Save Selection…

That will export the tasks to a new .tsk file, and you can then delete them from your main file without losing information.

There's another request for merging the export so you can keep archives all combined more easily: http://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26465-desktop-version-windows-linux-mac-of-task-coach/suggestions/457886-ability-to-move-selected-tasks-to-a-different-tsk

Although, note that you can already merge files after they have been separately exported.

So everything except the automatic part is already possible here.

It isn't a bad request, but maybe you are overusing reminders?

You could use priority more or other sorting to managing your goals and limit reminders to when they really are needed beyond these other things…

    Hmm.

Interesting idea. I currently use priority to identify the next task, and I mark inactive tasks I don't want to deal with so that only the main "next' list is active…

Do you really feel the need for additionally having separate flagging?

I could see it being appreciated though…

What is wrong with just expanding and collapsing your composite tasks?

And you can already hide and show inactive or complete or do other types of filtering such as categories…

I'm confused about what you want to do that isn't already possible…

I think we'll eventually get to adding a more flexible postpone feature where a quick one-day postponing is possible.

I'm making notes about this and it's in the list.
    Thanks for your request.

I am moving this to the iOS section and editing it.

In the main program, you can already choose to make start dates only proposed instead of marked, thus new tasks are not activated automatically, they are left inactive.

But for your purposes, I think you may also appreciate this request:

    Another thought:
What about making a single "category columns" object that the .ini knows about? It would be a single column that itself actually can have multiple subcolumns so to speak.
Then the .tsk file can specify which subcolumns are shown within this special composite column.

Only real downside (aside from whether this is too hard to implement) is that it wouldn't be flexible for breaking up the subcolumns after the drag/drop column request is implemented…

But drag/drop in calendar and connecting due and start are far from a full implementation of the ways people may want to postpone tasks…

I've made some notes about this for eventual discussion. I think postponing tasks, moving selected dates by relative amounts, is a valuable request.

Note: fixing efforts that were accidentally left going is the purpose of the idle time reminder, which is set in the preferences.

However, we're discussing if there may be better ways to deal with this.

But the task name shown already includes the full tree list that shows the main task…
So why do you want that in a separate column?

I think this will work best with this request implemented first:
    http://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26465-desktop-version-windows-linux-mac-of-task-coach/suggestions/371680-save-presets-of-defined-filters-and-sorting

Then it will just be a matter of tying categories to these presets automatically. But even without that, just having presets will make the situation functional.

Another note: I think this needs to include filters like whether completed or inactive or late etc. are hidden or shown. I.e. all types of existing filtering need to be available as preferences for each preset.

Note: along with this, there should be a way to fix certain filtering that happens in the background prior to whatever custom filtering is desired.

For example, a preset could say that subject should always be sorted ascending. Then, any time any other sorting is chosen, it is done on top of ascending subject (the program would always reset the subject sort before doing the new filtering).

This is needed because it is currently screwy how subject should be ascending but sorting by priority (for example) is usually descending. So there's currently no obvious way to do one and then the other without an unwanted backwards sorting happening in the middle some way or other.

I would love this. Very useful and time saving!
This idea would effectively recreate the smart-folders that some other programs use.

    So the request is:
Sort order that groups tasks together when connected as prerequisites/dependents

    Right?

Problem is, prerequisites are non-linear. What do you do if one task is a prerequisite for many others which have their own prerequisites with each other and with other tasks?

To follow up on the comments below:
This is already complete on *some* Linux distros because you can add the PPA for Ubuntu-related systems:
    https://launchpad.net/~taskcoach-developers/+archive/ppa

There's a request separately for getting more integrated with other systems and for getting Task Coach into the full Ubuntu Software Center and such:
    https://taskcoach.uservoice.com/forums/26480-other-task-coach-requests/suggestions/612267-make-the-linux-packages-available-in-repositories

So that's the route for Linux.

Mac and Windows should certainly have this (and don't worry, it would be an option you could turn off!)
